TOREROS DEFINED The University ofSan Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname of Toreros. In 1961, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father ofUSD, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. lJSD student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge.

Season Outlook

2 EXPERIENCED TOREROS LOOK FOR STRONG 2000 CAMPAIGN With eighteen starters and fifty-five players returning from last year's 5-5 ball club, fifth-year head coach Kevin McGarry is optimistic for a strong showing in 2000. The breakdown for returning starters is as follows -- eight from the offense, nine from the defensive side of the ball, and one special teams kicker. The big news on offense is the return of quarterback Mike Stadler who missed the 1999 campaign after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the team's first possession in their season opener at Azusa Pacific. The two-time First Team All– Pioneer Football League quarterback (1997 & 1998) is already USD's all-time passing leader for completions (311), passing yards (4,324) and touchdown passes (47). He will be pushed by returning senior Tom Jackson , a 1999 2nd Team All-PFL perfonner, who played solid, consistent football throughout the season, finishing with 1,5 10 yards passsing and 7 touchdowns. The Toreros return two First Team All-PFL performers on the offensive side of the ball -- senior tailback Oscar Arzu and senior offensive lineman Christos Renner. Arzu finished last year with 1,041 yards rushing on 162 attempts, good for 11 rushing scores. He busted loose for three games of 200-plus yards, gaining a season-best 213 yards and 4 touchdowns against Whittier; he also added a 202 yard/ 3 TD game against Cal Lutheran, and a 212 yard/2 TD contest against Butler. He heads into his final campaign needing 836 yards rushing to become the school's all– time leader in that department. Solidifying the backfield will be senior fullback Chris Long (5-11, 210) and senior tailback Stanford Tuupo (6-0, I95). Renner earned First Team

A ll-PFL as a tackle and will anchor a line that also returns seniors Chris Lamb (6-4, 285 lb.) and Sean McCamey (6- 1, 260 lb.). Despite the loss of Dylan Ching, the school's career leader in every receiving statistical department, Stadler and Jackson will have plenty of targets to aim for. Senior wideouts Matt Hackett (22 catches for 240 yards) and Mark Pappas (11 catches for 135 yards, I TD) will see plenty ofballs coming their way this season, and senior WR David Barlow (6-0, 190) and junior Dylan Mora (5 -11 , 183) will also see plenty ofaction. Junior tightend Matt Guardia finished the 1999 campaign on a strong note with two touchdown receptions against Wagner in the season finale. Defensively the Toreros return nine starters with a trio of 2nd Team All-PFL picks back -- senior safety Kyle Slusser, senior tackle Anthony Banovac, and junior linebacker Bryan Baxter. Slusser returns for his fourth season and third as the Toreros starting safety. For the second straight season he earned 2nd Team All-PFL honors while leading the team in tackles (97) and interceptions (4). Slusser, who tallied 3 interceptions against Wagner last year, enters the 2000 season needing two picks to surpass current assistant coach Kaeo Gouveia's school record of 12. Banovac was a steady force for the Toreros on the defensive line where he totaled 34 tackles ( 16 unassisted), finished with a team-best 7 quarterback sacks (-38 yards), and was second on the team with I I tackles for loss. In his first two years, Baxter has been runner-up in team tackles to Slusser. Last year he finished with 93 (39 unassisted) and finished first with 13 tackles for loss (-46 yards). Additionally, he added 2 interceptions, 4 quarterback hurries, I fumble recovery, 2 forced fumbles and 2 blocked kicks . The defense will be solidified by the return of seven other upperclassmen who

saw a majority of playing time as starters in 1999 -- senior LB Matt Altmyer (6-0, 225), senior invert Alika Vasper (6-2, 220),junior invert Brian Luman (5-11, 208),junior DL Brandon Camacho (5-9, 240),junior DL Matt Craig (6-2, 250),junior DB Jason De Mello (5-7, I80), and junior DB Wesley Morgan (5-9, 175). On special teams, sophomore kicker Rafael O'Campo returns as the team's kicker -- he was 3-for-6 in field goal attempts last season with a long of45 yards against Wagner College. Junior Dylan Mora also saw sometime at kicker, but both players will be pushed by a trio ofnewcomers -- junior Josh Feldman , who redshirted his freshman year at Cal before transferring to Saddleback JC; freshman David Maurer, a three-time Special Teams Player of the Year for Poway High School ; and freshman Brent Labarrere, who earned First Team All-CIF honors at Damien HS . The Toreros, who finished 5-2 in home games last year at Torero Stadium, will play six home contests this season --Azusa Pacific (Sept. 2), Menlo (Sept. 23), Central Connecticut (Oct. 7), Davidson (Oct. 14), Valparaiso (Oct. 28), and Dayton (Nov. 11 ). Road games wi ll take the Toreros to Whittier College (Sept. 9), Brown University (Sept. 16), Drake (Sept. 30), and Butler (Oct. 21 ). When you mix together the return of fifty-five players from last year's 5-5 club, and you add in a so lid incoming class of seventy newcomers, you have the makings for an outstanding 2000 campaign.

KEVIN McGARRY • 5th Season as Torero Head Coach ♦ 23rd Season on USD Coaching Staff

Kevin McGarry enters his fifth year as head coach of the University ofSan Diego football program. With 55 returners and 18 starters back from last season, McGarry is optimistic the Toreros will improve on last year's 5-5 season . In 1997 he directed the Toreros to an 8-3 overall mark and a school best second place finish in the Pioneer Football League with its 4-1 mark. The 1997 campaign was USD's best showing since moving to the NCAA Division I-AA ranks and the PFL conference in 1993. The '97 club became only the fourth USD squad to achieve at least eight victories in 35 years of Torero football, and it was the program's most victories since the 1981 season. The team's 33.6 points per game average ranks second all-time in USD football. The tenth coach to direct the Torero football program since its start in 1956, Kevin is the first USD graduate to head the position. McGarry enters the 2000 season with a career mark of 19-22.

McGarry is no stranger to USD football. Prior to his stint as head coach in 1996, he was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for eighteen seasons, including the last fourteen as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach . He became a full-time assistant for football in 1985 -- his first seven years (1978-84) were split between football , women's softball (head coach) and as an elementary school teacher. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevin was also responsible for recruiting and as liaison for the USD Football Alumni Club. "Kevin's years of experience at USD have prepared him well for this position," stated Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics . "He clearly understands the role of the football program within the mission of the university."

Over the past twenty-two seasons with Kevin on the coaching staff, USD has accumulated an overall record of 120-96-3, including sixteen seasons with records of .500 or better. Of the nine USD football players that have been named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1981 , eight have come from the defensive side of the ball, including seven defensive backs. In 1987 the Torero defense set a school record for shutouts in a season with four, and the team gave up just 100 points in ten contests and finished 6-3-1. Prior to joining the USD coaching staff in 1978, Kevin was a two– year letterwinner on the USD football squad (1976-77), earning co– Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He played two years (1974-75) at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1975. He received both hisBachelorofArts in Education (1979), and his Master's Degree in Education Administration (1985) from the Univer– sity of San Diego. He is currently on a leave of absense from USD's Doctoral program in Education. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, reside in Scripps Ranch and have four children: twins Pat and Mike ( 13 year-olds), Timbo ( 10-year-old), and Matt (4-year-old). GREG QUICK Offensive Coordinator & Offensive Line Coach Greg Quick returns for his second season where he will again be the Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line coach. Prior to coming to USD, he was head coach at St. Norbert College, an NCAA Division 111 program in De Pere, Wisconsin, for five seasons. Included in his 21-25 career mark was a 6-3 finish and a tie for the North Division title in 1994; a 5-4 record with a North Division runner-up finish in 1996. In 1998 the Green Knights finished 5-5 overall. Prior to St. Norbert, the Painesville, Ohio native was head coach at the University of Ch icago, where he rebuilt the program, culminating in a 5-5 record in 1993 , the most wins since the Amos Alonzo Stagg team of 1929. His teams led the NCAA Division III in total rushing yards his last two seasons. Other coaching stops have included C laremont-Mudd Colleges (Def. Coor.; 1988-89), Edinboro University (Def. Coor.; 1986-88), New Mexico State (LB's; 1985-86), Heidelberg Coll ege (Off. Coor.; 1984-85), St. Edward HS (Def. Coor.; 1983 -84), and Emporia State (Def. BOB TOMPSON Defensive Coordinator & Linebackers Coach Bob is in his second yea r as a full-time USD assistant where he wi ll again be defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In addition to hi s coaching duties, he plays a major role in USD's recruiting efforts. Tompson coached USO quarterbacks for two seasons ( 1996, 1997) before taking a position as quarterbacks/wide rece ivers coach in 1998 at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. Before coming to USO he was defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Montclair Prep HS in Yan Nuys , California for two seasons ( 1994, 1995). The 1994 squad won the CIF Championship. Prior to Montc lair

Coor.; 198 1-83 and Off. Line; 1979-81 ). An accomp li shed motivational speaker, Quick has delivered his "Quick Success" message to numerous businesses and organi zations. Greg and hi s wife Jeannie have been ma1Tied 2 1 years and have six children: Phil, Nate, Bonnie, Ben, Brittany and Corey. The Quick Family resides in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego.

Bob earned hi s B.S . degree in Physical Education & Health in 1982 from Western Michi gan (he played wingback for four years); and more recently earned hi s M.Ed. (empha– sis in P.E.) from Azusa Pacific. Bob and hi s wife Jeannette have one son , Jam ie (age 8).

MIKE RISH - Wide Receivers Coach, 17th Year Mike is beginning hi s 17th season on the Torero staff. He returns to coach the rece ivers, something he has done fo r fifteen of the past sixteen Torero seasons. Mike pl ayed fo r USD from 1979-83 where he posted career numbers that make him one ofthe best rece ivers ever to play at USD -- he ranks second all-time w ith IO I recepti ons, 18 rece iving touchdowns and I, 722 receiv ing yards. He held the schoo l marks in all three career rece iving departments from 1983 through 1997; he was passed recentl y by Torero rece iver Dylan Ching. In 1983 he was selected the team's scholar-athl ete by the ati onal Football Foundation and Co ll ege Ha ll of Fame. In the Toreros nati onally-telev ised game between Occ idental in 1982, Ri sh was named the CBS Chevro let Pl ayer of the Game. Mike graduated from USD w ith an Accounting degree in 1984. He is the Vice President fo r Secondary Marketing for Guild Mortgage Company in San Diego.

KELLY JEFFREY - Quarterbacks & Special Teams Coor., 3rd Year Kell y begins hi s third season w ith the Toreros where he will aga in coach the quarterbacks. Thi s season he a lso takes on additional duti es as Spec ial Teams Coordinator. Prior to USD he was running backs coach for two seasons at Northern State University in South Dakota. During the 1994 and 1995 seasons he was rece ivers coach at Dic kinson State Uni versity. He earned hi s Hea lth and Physica l Education degree from Dick inson in 1996, and later ea rned hi s Master of Science degree in Physica l Educati on from Northern State in 1998. He played quarterback for Southern Oregon between 1990-93 where hi s teams won two league titles in the Mt. Hood Co lumb ia Football Assoc iation.

TIM ANTONGIOVANNI - Running Backs & TE, 2nd Year T im beg ins hi s second season with the Toreros where he wi ll aga in coac h the running backs. He also takes on the add itional ass ignment ofcoaching the tight ends. T im is no stranger to US D football where he pl ayed fo r fo ur seasons ( 1992-95) as a w ide rece iver and running back. A 1996 US D graduate, Tim earned hi s degree in Psyc hology. In 1997 & 1998 he taught Hi story at Frazier Mounta in Hi gh Schoo l in Lebec, Ca li forn ia; and hi s coac hing duti es there included head varsity baseball coach and offensive line/defens ive line coac h for footba ll. Du ring the 1996-97 season he was fres hman ru nning back coac h and head junior varsity baseba ll coach at Garces Memoria l High Schoo l, hi s alma mater, in Bakersfi e ld, Ca liforn ia.

KAEO GOUVEIA - Defensive Backs Coach/1st Year Kaeo begins hi s first season w ith the Toreros where he wi ll assist coac hing the defensive backs. Gouveia played fo r US D the past fo ur seasons earning First Team All-Pi oneer Footba ll League honors the last two years at cornerback. Named the team's Defensive Pl ayer of the Year in 1998 & 1999, Gouve ia leaves th e Torero program as the a ll-time leader in intercepti ons with 12. This past season he started all ten games and fini shed with 49 tack les, 4 pass breakups and 3 intercepti ons. From Ka ilua, Hawai i, Gouve ia prepped at Kamehameha Hi gh Schoo l where he lettered in both foo tball and baseball. In footba ll he earned 2nd Team All -S tate and 2nd Team All-Interscho lasti c League of Hono lulu honors. He is on sc hedul e to compl ete hi s undergraduate degree in Business (Marketing) thi s coming year. JOE ROSIELLO - Defensive Line Coach/1st Year

Joe begins hi s first season w ith the Toreros where he w ill coach the defen sive line. He brings a wea lth of coac hing ex peri ence w ith hi s most recent stop at th e Coast Guard Academy where he was defensive line coach the past two seasons. He also gained coac hing experi ence at Ho ly Cross in 1997, assisting th e linebacke rs; he coac hed th e offensive line at Fordham in 1996; and he was a student ass ista nt fo r the offensive line at Boston Uni versity in 1995. . A 1996 graduate of Boston Uni versity where he ea rn ed hi s B.S . degree in Phys ica l Ed uca ti on (Human Movement), Joe pl ayed two seasons at BU in 199 1-92 as a defe nsive lineman.
