SETTING The Uni versity of San Diego is an independent Catho lic institution of hi gher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overl ooking Mi ssion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campu s is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego. The campu s was named after a Spani sh vill age near Madrid - Al cal a de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the vill age was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christi ans recaptured the vill age centuries later and founded a uni versity whose buildings became the inspi rati on for USD's architectu ral style. THE CAMPUS The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturall y unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings des igned in an ornamental 16th century Spani sh Re– naissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed eleven major constructi on and expansion projects. A fi ve-story, Spani sh Renaissance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was compl eted in 1998. A landscaped fountain pl aza was fini shed in the fa ll of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmacul ata and Hughes Admini strati on Ce nter. In 1992, the uni versity completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , whi ch includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M . and George M . Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology. ACADEMICS
USO enroll s more than 6,800 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and gradu ate degree programs. The uni versity's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schoo ls of Business Admini stration , Educati on, Law and Nursing. C lass size gen– erall y averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher rati o be ing 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full -time fac ulty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the coun try's coll eges and uni versities, pub– li shed by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the reg iona l to nati onal category in 1994. The uni versity is ranked among the top I00 schoo ls in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student acti vities include cultural events, dances, boat crui ses, beach parti es, BBQ's, concerts, comedy ni ghts, sympos ia and much more. Stu– dents parti cipate in a wide range of vo lunteer proj ects such as adult lit– eracy tutoring, seni o r c iti zen outreach, and house building in Tij uana.
The intramural program is also an integral part of stu– dent life on campu s with over two- thirds of the USO community partaking in in– tramu ral sports.
DID YOU KNOW? • With a donation of $7 million by Sid and Jenny Craig, USD received the lead gift necessary to proceed with planning its much needed $17 .5 million Sports/Activities Center, the Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP). The pa– vilion, which will be located at the eastern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Baseball Stadium, will include a 5,000-seat gymnasium, coaches of– fices, fitness center and athletic training facilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand and reception room. The Chet Pagni Athletic Hall of Fame will also be housed in the facility. Co'nstruction of the JCP should be completed in the Fall of 2000.
ATHLETICS
The Uni versity of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearl y all sports and competes in 16 interco ll egiate sports on the NCAA Di vision I leve l. The football team will beg in its seventh season in the Pioneer Football League. Women's sports include: bas ketball , cross country, rowing, soccer, so ftball , swimming, tenni s and vo lleyball. Men's sports include: baseball , basketball , cross country, golf, foo tball , rowing, soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won seven conference champi onships; made 20 post-season appearances; had nineteen Conference Coaches of the Year; sixteen Conference Pl ayers of the Year; eleven Conference Freshmen of the Year; three WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Year; and 2 1 NCAA All -American s. Thi s past year, Zuzana Lesenarova, a junior on the women's tenni s team, became the school's first ever nati onal champi on by winning the 1999 NCAA Women's Tenni s Singles Championship.
