The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution-of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooki ng Mi ssion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean . The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spani sh village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christi ans recaptured the village centuries later and founded a uni– versity whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The USD campu s is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renai s– sance style. Since 1984, USD has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A five– story, Spanish Renai ssance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A land– scaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labo– ratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.
ACADEMICS
USD enroll s more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The uni versi ty's aca– demic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. C lass size gener– all y averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher rati o being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time fac ulty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and uni vers ities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in I994. The uni versity is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Stu– dents participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citi zen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intra–
mural program is also an in– tegral part of student Ii fe on campus with over two – thirds of the USD commu– nity partaking in intramural sports.
Did You Know? • The University of San Diego was selected by the JohnTempleton Foun– dation for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four-year accredited undergraduate institu– tions that emphasize character building an integral part of the col– lege experience. Foundation offi– cials made special mention of USD's "Ethics Across the Curriculum," a campus-wide initiative funded with a two-year, $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation. USD is one of eight California colleges and universities named to the honor roll.
ATHLETICS
The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in I6 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team will begin its sixth season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports include: basketball , cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tenni s and vo lleyball. Men's sports include: baseball , basketball , cross country, golf, football , rowing, soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won five conference championships; made 17 post-season ap– pearances; had sixteen Conference Coaches of the Year; twelve Conference Players of the Year; ten Conference Freshmen of the Year; three WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year; and 18 NCAA All -Americans. This past year, Zuzana Lesenarova, a sophomore on the women 's tenni s team, earned her second straight NCAA All -America honor after advancing to the semifinals of the I998 NCAA Indi vidual Championships -- she fini shed with a national rank– ing of 9th.
