TOREROS HOST REDLANDS BULLDOGS Pagel THE GAME: The USO Toreros, coming off a hard fought contest with Saint Mary's College, host the University of Redlands tonight at Torero Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm. USO is now 1-1 after Saturday's 30-20 loss to the Gaels, a NCAA Division I-AA scholarship program. Redlands comes to town with a record of 1-0 after last week's 33- 25 win over Lewis & Clark. THE SERIES: The Redlands Bulldogs lead the overall series 10-9, including wins in the last two meetings (16-3 in 1995 and 28-7 in 1992). HEAD COACH KEVIN McGARRY: Kevin McGarry (USO, '79) is in his second season as the Torero head coach and his 20th overall on the San Diego football staff. In his first season at the helm of the football program he guided the Toreros to a 4-6 record. The tenth coach to direct the USO football program since its start in 1956, Kevin is the first USO graduate to head the position. Prior to 1996, he was an assistant coach at USO for eighteen years, including the last fourteen as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Over the past twenty years with Kevin on the coaching staff, USO has accumulated an overall record of 106-82-3, including fourteen seasons with records of .500 or better. Prior to joining the USO staff in 1978, Kevin was a two-year letterwinner on the USO football squad (1976-77), earning co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He received both his B.A. in Education (1979), and his Master's in Education Administration (1985) from USO. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, reside in Scripps Ranch with their four boys: twins Pat and Mike, limbo and Matt. Senior place kicker Tim Roth (Chico, CA) was selected the Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week ... against Saint Mary's he was a perfect 2-for-2 in field goals with a long of 41 ; added two PAT kicks; and averaged 39.3 yards on four punts. Combined with last week's 4 straight field goals, Tim is now 6-for-6, tying a USO record for consecutive field goals made. He is currently ranked #1 in NCAA I-AA statistics for field goals made per game at 3.0. In last year's season finale against Dayton, Tim was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week for November 9th, giving him three staight honors in three contests. SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: The University of Redlands, a NCAA Division III program, return approximately 55 players and 14 starters from last year's squad that finished 7-2 and a perfect 5-0 in the SCIAC ... head coach Mike Maynard owns a career record of 56-27-1 since 1988 ... this past weekend the Bulldogs defeated Lewis & Clark 33-25 .. . UR built a 21-3 lead after the first quarter ... senior Damian Delfino, who broke the school record for receptions last season (60 catches for 1,013 yards and 10 TDs), has moved over to the quarterback slot ... against Lewis & Clark, Delfino fi nished 23-for-40 for 233 yards, 2 IDs and 3 interceptions (2 picks came UR's first two possessions) ... his main targets were junior WR Danny Ragsdale (9 catches for 89 yards, 1_TD) and senior WR Alex Eckert (7 catches for 53 yards, 1 TD) ... UR tallied 331 yards of offense (233 passing, 98 rushing) while giving up 426 to Lewis & Clark (370 passing) ... the biggest strength for the Bulldog defense is their defensive line where they return every starter from last year. UP NEXT FOR USD: The Toreros are on the road the next two weeks. On Saturday, September 27th they kickoff at California Lutheran at 1:00 p.m. They open up Pioneer Football League play at Evansville on Saturday, October 4th. 1997 USD Football Profile

The University of San Diego football program heads into its fifth season at the NCAA Division I-AA level and as a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL). Head coach Kevin McGarry, entering his 2nd year at the helm of the Torero program, returns approximately fifty-five players and ten start– ers from last year's 4-6 club that finished 1-4 in the PFL. Sev– enty newcomers boost the roster total close to 125. The Toreros will return four offensive starters, five defensive starters and All-PFL kicker Tim Roth on special teams. Offensive starters back include OL Matt Hawkins (6-0, 255, Jr.); FB Jared Keo (5-9, 220, Sr.), TE Frank Brown (6-3, 220, Sr.); and WR Dylan Ching (5-11, 195 , So.), a 2nd Team All-PFL pick a year ago after leading the team with 24 catches for 550 yards and 6 touchdowns. Key returning players expected to compete for starting assign– ments in '97 include QB Matt Doherty (6-3, 180, Sr.), who is John Khamis' projected replacement; and WR

TE Randy Weber (6-1, 220, So.) and QB Mike Stadler (6-2, 195, So.) will both push for playing time at their respective positions. The defense, which returns five starters, should be strong on the line and in the secondary. Starters back include DL Lukas Smart (6-1, 227, Jr.; 36 tackles & 6 sacks); DL Buddy Brown (5-10, 250, Sr.; 2nd Team All-PFL); DL D.J. Walcott (6-2, 265, Jr.); DB Travis Dellinger (6-0, 195, Jr.), third on the team with 55 tackles; and CB Elton Perkins (5-7, 162, Jr.) . The defense will get an immediate boost from the return of DB Sal Navarro (5- 11 , 185, Jr.), a '95 First Team All-PFL performer who sat out last season to concentrate on studies. Others expected to make key contributions include DB Brian McLoughlin (5-10, 195, Jr.; 46 tackles), DB Kaeo Gouveia (5-8, 160, So.), LB Andre Lee (6-1, 238, Sr.), and LB Kevin Hawes (6-2, 228, Sr.). Senior Tim Roth (6-2, 190, Sr.) will pace the special teams unit after being named First Team All-PFL a year ago and finishing second on the team in points with 43 (8x l2 FGs; 19x24 PATs). He will also compete for the open punter 's spot left vacant by gradu–

ated and PFL 1st-teamer Mike Buhler. Look for senior Elton Perkins and sophomore Kaeo Gouveia to step in for graduated seniors Jeb Dougherty and Evan Hlavacek and handle most of the return duties . The Toreros, who play their first ever 11-game · schedule at the I-AA level, open the 1997 season with three straight nonconference home games (Azusa Pa- cific, Saint Mary's and Redlands). They

complete the month of September with a road tilt at Cal Lutheran on the 27th, followed by five straight PFL contests from October 4th through November 1st. USD will then finish out their regular– season schedule with a road contest at Whittier (Nov. 8th) and with their home– coming game versus Wagner College

SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Re– naissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed nine major construction and expansion projects. A land– scaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, class– rooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.

ACADEMICS

USO enrolls more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College ofArts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size gener– ally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio be– ing 18: 1. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, pub– lished by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation.

STUDENT LIFE

Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Stu– dents participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen out-

reach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on cam– pus with over two-thirds of the USO community partak– ing in intramural sports.

Did You Know? • The University of San Diego was selected by the John Templeton Foundation for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four– year accredited undergraduate in– stitutions that emphasize character building an integral part of the col– lege experience. Foundation offi– cials made special mention of USD's "Ethics Across the Curricu– lum," a campus-wide initiative funded with a two-year, $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foun– dation. USO is one of eight Califor– nia colleges and universities named to the honor roll.

ATHLETICS

The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team will begin its fifth season in the Pioneer Football League. Women's sports include: basket– ball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, golf, football, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USO teams have won four conference championships; made 15 post-season appear– ances; had twelve Conference Coaches of the Year; ten Conference Players of the Year; ten Conference Freshmen of the Year; three WCC ScholarAthletes of the Year; and 17 NCAAAll– Americans. This past year, Heidi Ambrose, a senior on the women's basketball team, was selected the school's Valadictorian after achieving a perfect 4.0 g.p.a. in BioChemistry through– out her four years. She plans to attend Medical School this Fall.

KEVIN McGARRY ■ 2nd Season as Torero Head Coach ■ 20th Season on Coaching Staff

Kevin McGarry enters his second year as head coach of the USD football program. In his first season at the helm of the USD football program he guided the Toreros to a 4-6 record. He took over for Brian Fogarty, who stepped down after 13 seasons to become USD's Asso– ciate Director of Athletics for Development. The tenth coach to direct the Torero football program since its start in 1956, Kevin is the first USD graduate to head the position. McGarry is no stranger to USD football. Prior to his stint as head coach in 1996, he was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for eighteen seasons, including the last fourteen as the defen– sive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He became a full-time assistant for football in 1985 -- his first seven years (1978-84) were split between football, women's softball (head coach) and as an elementary school teacher. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevin was also responsible for recruiting and as liaison for the USD Football Alumni Club. "Kevin's years of experience at USD have prepared him well for this position," stated Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. "He clearly understands the role of the football program within the mission of the university." Over the past nineteen seasons with Kevin on the coaching staff, USD has accumulated an overall record of 105-81-3, includ– ing fourteen seasons with records of .500 or better. Of the nine USD football players that have been named GTE/CoSIDA Aca– demic All-Americans since 1981, eight have come from the defen– sive side of the ball, including seven defensive backs. In 1987 the Torero defense set a school record for shutouts in a season with four, and the team gave up just 100 points in ten contests and finished 6-3-1. Prior to joining the USD coaching staff in 1978, Kevin was a two-year letterwinneron the USD football squad (1976-77), earning co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He played two years (1974-75) at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1975. He received both his Bachelor of Arts in Education (1979), and his Master's Degree in Education Administration (1985) from the University of San Diego. He is currently on a leave of absense from USD's Doctoral program in Education. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, reside in Scripps Ranch and have four children: twins Pat and Mike (10 year-olds), Timbo (7- years– old), and Matt ( I-year-old).

Jim came to USD from Occidental College in Los Angeles where for three years ( 1993-95) he was Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Coordinator. Prior to Occidental he held coaching positions at Cal State Fullerton (1991-92), ASU (1989-90), Pacific (1985-88) and North Central College ( 1983-85). He played football at College of DuPage where he was a NJCAA Region 5 All-State defensive back and fini shed his playing career at North Central College in Naperville,Illinois. He graduated from North Central in 1978 where he earned a double major in Physical Education and Recreation. Jim and his wife Kimberly have two daughters, Gretchen (5) and Hannah (2). BOB THOMPSON Quarterbacks

Aftercoaching linebackers and directing Special Teams his first two seasons (1 993, 1995), Bill moved over to offense last year where he was the Offensive Coordinatorand coached the running backs. In 1997 he will again be Offensive Coordinator, and coach the offensive line. In addition to his coaching duties, he plays a major role in USD's recruiting efforts.

A 1981 graduate ofOccidental, Bill earned his undergraduate degrees in Physical Education and History - he completed his teaching credential from Oxy in the spring of 1982. Besides USD, his vast coaching experiences include stints at New Mexico State (1982-85); San Francisco State ( 1986); as Offensive Coordinatorand Offensive Line Coach at Occidental (1987-90); Offensive Line Coach atCS Fullerton (1991-92); and Offensive Coordinator/RecruitingCoor– dinator at Redlands ( 1994). MIKE RISH Recehers Mike is beginning his 14th season on the Torero staff. Mike played for USD from 1979-83 and is the school 's all-time career leader in three receiving categories: receptions (10 I), touchdowns ( 18) and receiving yardage (1,722 yards). Mike graduated from USD with an Ac– counting degree in 1984. He is the Assistant Vice President for Secondary Marketing for Guild Mortgage Co!Ilpany in San Diego. Bob enters his second year with the USD staff where he will again coach the quar– terbacks. Prior to USD he was the Defensive Coordinatorandquarterbackscoach at Montclair Prep High School in Van Nuys, California for two seasons. The 1994 squad won the CIF Championship.

Prior to Montclair he held coaching positions at Occidental ( 1993); head coach at Bishop Montgomery HS ( 1992); head coach at Pius X ( 1991 ); head coach at Daniel Murphy HS ( 1990); quarterback/wide receiver coach at Occidental( 1988, 1989) where they were two-time SCIAC Champs;and wide receiver coach at Nevada ( 1983-84 ), where they won the Big Sky title in 1983. Bob earned his B.S.degree in Physical Education & Health in 1982 from Western Michigan University (he played wingback four years); and more recently earned his M.Ed. (emphasis in P.E.) from Azusa Pacific. Bob and his wife Jeannette have one son, Jamie (age 5), and reside in Bonita.

Shay begins his first season with the Toreros where he will coach the Inverts on defense and be Special Teams Coordinator. Shay is a 1994 graduate of Southern Oregon University where he earned his B.S. in Health Promotion & Fitness Management. A four–

Chris begins his first season with the Toreros where he will coach the tight ends. A 1996 graduate of Redlands iwth a

B.S. degree in Business Economics. Chris was a two-time AII-SCIAC performer as an offen– sive center,playing fort he Bulldogs during 1994 & 1995. Prior to Red lands, Chris played two years at Citrus Junior College where he was First Team All-State and an Academic All-American. From San Marino High School. Chris prepped at San Marino High School where he played three years of varsity football as an offensive lineman.

The 1997 football season marks the fifth year for the Pioneer Football League (PFL), a conference committed to operating a quality football program for the benefit of the student-athletes and the university community. Formed in November of 1991, the Pioneer Football League is comprised of NCAA Division I universities that previously sponsored intercollegiate football at other levels. With the passing of NCAA legislation at the January 1991 convention, Division I institutions were required to conduct all intercollegiate sports at the same level. Therefore, the five charter members, Butler University, University of Dayton, Drake University, University of Evansville and Valparaiso University, joined together, sharing a common academic and athletic philosophy and a common commitment to operate quality football programs. In February, 1992, the University ofSan Diegojoined the PFL for its inaugural season. The PFL joins the Ivy and the Patriot Leagues as NCAA Division I-AA conferences that provide only need-based financial aid for football players. The conference remains a proponent of NCAA Division I-AAA legislation that would develop a classification for Division I football programs operating with need-based aid and adopted the moniker of Pioneer based on the intent to become one of the first I-AAA leagues.
