TOREROS LOOKING FOR NINTH STRAIGHT WINNING CAMPAIGN WEEK #11: The USO Toreros close out their 1995 season this Saturday, November 11th, against Wagner College in a nonconference game. It is USD's Homecoming game and kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm. San Diego claimed third place in the Pioneer Football League this past weekend with their 37-16victory over Butler. Wagner came from behind to beatMonmouth, 21-20, and come to town with a record of 7-1. THE COACHES: USD's Brian Fogarty (CS Los Angeles, 1975) is in his 13th season with the Toreros. In search of his ninth straight winning campaign, Fogarty currently has acareer mark of 71-52-3. Last season he finished 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the PFL standings. Wagner coach Walt Hameline (Brockport State, 1975) isin his 15th season as the director of athletics/head football coach. Hameline currently boasts an overall record of 117-38-2. SERIES RECORD: San Diego leads the series 2-0. The Toreroswon last year's game in Staten Island, New York, 45-35. SAN DIEGOSCORES SEASON-HIGH 37 POINTS INWIN OVER BUTLER: The USD Toreros scored a season-high 37 points (31 in the second half) this past weekend in their victory over Butler. The previous two weeks USD managed to score a total of three points in losses to Redlands (16-3) and Drake (9-0). With the win the Torerosfinished third in the final PFL standings behind Drake (5-0) and Dayton (4-1 ). Offensively the Toreros were paced by sopho- more FB Jared Keo (112 yards rushing, 1 TD), QB John Khamis (rushed for one TD and completed a 20-yard TD strike to WR Brian Stevens) and kicker Matt Young (4-of-5 on PAT kicks, as well as a season-best 48-yard field goal). Besides Dougherty, the defense was paced by senior FS Doug Popovich (11 tackles), sophomore DB Andrew Firestone (1 0tackles, 1 interception) and senior DB Shaun Grove (3 tackles, 67-yard TD return after interception). Junior punter Mike Buhler punted just four times for a 43.5 average (two went for 50+ yards) - he still leads the PFL in punting with his 39.03 yards per punt average. Butler's Arnold Mickens rushed for 161 yards and 2 TDsto pace the Bulldogs. TheUSD football programheads into its third season at theNCAA Division I-AAlevel and a member ofthePioneer FootballLeague (PFL). Head Coach Brian Fogarty, entering his 13th year with the Toreros program, will be searchingfor his ninth straightwinning campaign. USD finished 2-3 in the PFL in 1994, a onegame improvement in thePFLwin column, and6-4 overall. CoachFogarty returns approximately 50 student-athletesand 13 start- ers (5 offensive/7 defensive/I specialty) from last year's club. Starters returning to the offense include RB/WR Evan Hlavacek (5-11, 170, jun- ior), tightend Duncan Hardy (8 catches for 146 yards in 6 starts), and linemen Brendan Bracken (6-0, 240 lbs., soph. left guard), Edward Flores (5-10, 230 lbs., soph. right guard) and Todd Plutchok (6-0, 277 lbs., juniorright tackle). Hlavacek, who was named FirstTeamAll-PFL a year ago at wide receiver, caught 25 passes for497 yards(l9.9 yards per reception) and 5 TDs. He also averaged 4.5 yards a carry rushing and finished with 294 yards and 3 TDs.Halfback TimAntongiovanni (5-10, 183 lbs.) is the lone senior on the offensive side ofthe ball and returns with the most experience in the backfield. Three key positions the Toreros will have to replace in theirWing-T offense include quarterback, fullback and left tackle. Lost to graduation were First TeamAll-PFL performers Vince Moiso at quarterback (1,630 yards passing, 13 IDs) and left tackleMatt Taylor. Fullback Jermaine Rucker, who set a school record for rushing with 1,332 yards, transferred out ofUSD for personal reasons. Leading candidates for the quarterback spot belong to returners James Beck and Brian Stevens, as well as JC transfer John Khamis.

Defensive Coordinator Kevin McGarry returns seven starters. Three ofthe four were lost to graduation - rover JesseHall, ILB Tim Lynch andNGAdam Smith. Heading the list ofreturning starters is 6-1, 195 lb. senior strongsafety Doug Popovich, a First Team AII-PFL selection, who led the league in tackles with 142, and who was selected First Team GTE/ Academic All-America. Additional starters back include sophomore DL Buddy Brown (5-10, 247 lbs.), juniorDL Ryan Marcos (6-0, 248 lbs.), senior LB Curtis DeMers (6-2, 230 lbs.), junior nickel back Jeb Dougherty (6-0, 185 lbs.), seniorcomer Shaun Grove (5-10, 185 lbs.), and sophomore comer Kujanga Jackson (5-11, 185 lbs.). Dougherty finished second to Popovich in tackles with 92, good for 8th overall in the Pioneer Football League. The Toreros will also be looking to replace two-time First Team

AII-PFL punterRobert Ray. The leading candidate is junior MikeBuhler (40.3 average on 3 punts in 1994). Senior Matt Young, a 2nd Team AII- PFL place kicker in 1994, returns for his final seasonafter finishing asUSD's second leading scorer with 48 points (7-12 FG; 27-29 PAT). Top candi- dates for return duties include Jeb Dougherty (22.5 yards per kickoff , return) and Evan Hlavacek (21 .5 yards per kickoffreturn). Dougherty ended the yearwith a 92-yard kickoffreturn for a TD against Dayton, and is the current PFL leader with a 98-yard return in 1993 (Azusa Pacific). The Toreros open up their 1995 schedule at home on Sept. 2nd with Chico State, while their first PFL contest will be a week later at Day- ton (Sept. 9th). The Oct. 7th home game with Azusa Pacific is Parents Weekend. Enteringhis 13thyearatthe helmoftheUSDfootballprogram, headcoach Brian Fogarty is embarking on his third season at the NCAA Division l-AA level. The 1994 season saw the Toreros finish 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Pioneer FootballLeague(PFL). CoachFogartyentersthe 1995campaignwitha career markof66-48-3 andeightstraightwinning seasons. Prior to USD's jump to the NCAA Division I-AA ranks, the Toreros programwasoneofthetopDivisionIII programs in thewest. In 1992,Fogarty's 7-2-1 finishmarked theprogram's fourth consecutivesevenwinseason(28-9- 1duringthatspan) anditssixthconsecutivewinningcampaign. Coach Fogarty's steamshave alsofaredwell in the classroom. In eachofthe last two seasons, six Toreros have been named to the All-Pioneer Football League Academic Team. Last year junior Doug Popovich was narned First Team GTE Acadernic All-America,an outstanding feat since it included student-athletes frombothNCAADivisionl-Aandl-AAschools. Since1986fiveToreroshave earnednational GTEAcademicAll-Americahonors, and the 1992seasonsaw

five players get named to theDistrictVIIIAcademicAll-Americateam. TheNationalFootball Foundationand CollegeHallofFamehasrecognizedascholar-athletefromUSDeachyearsince 1983. Also,since 1983,theUSD football programhas graduatedover95 percentofits players. As evidenceofthehighregardinwhichheis heldbyhis colleaguesand football peopleingeneral,Brianhas served on the Board ofDirectors to the National Football Foundation and CollegeHall ofFame (San Diego Chapter) the pastnine years; servedon theAll-AmericaSelectionCommitteeforDistrictIX(1987-89);and the WesternRegionalAdvisoryCommitteefor Division IIIRankings (1990-92). CoachFogarty,whoserves asthe team'soffensive coordinatorandoffensivelinecoach,enters 1995 insearch ofhis ninthstraightwinningseason. Brian and his wife Vicki have four children: Bridget, Joe, Colleen and Megan. Bridget is entering her second year at the UniversityofSanDiego.

Bill is beginning his second season as a full-time assistant with USD's coaching staff. He returns after a year away, serving thispastseason asOffensiveCoordinatorand Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Redlands. Thisseason, like his first at USD in

Kevin begins his 17thseason on the USD staff. This will be his 14th year as the defensive coordinator for the Toreros. In addition tohis on-the-fieldduties, Kevin is also responsible for recruiting and is the liaison for the Football Alumni Club. Kevin was a standout playerat both Saddleback College, earning MVP honors in 1975,andatUSD,where hewas the Defensive Player of the Year in 1977. He received both his Bachelor of

1993,Bill willcoach linebackersanddirectthe special teams unit. Besides his coaching duties, he will play a major role in USD's recruiting efforts. A 1981 graduate of Occidental, Bill earned his undergraduate degrees in Physical Education and History he completed his teaching credential from Oxy in the spring of I982. His vast coaching experiences includestintsat NewMexico State(1982-85); San FranciscoState(1986); as Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach at Occidental (1987-90); Offensive Line CoachatCS Fullerton (1991-92);USD (1993) and Redlands.

Arts in Education (1979), and his Masters Degree in EducationalAdministra- tion (1985) from the University of San Diego. Kevin is presently enrolled in USD's Doctoral program in Education. Tim. Kevin and his wife, Mary Ann, have three children: Pat Mike and Mike RISH Receivers Mike is beginning his 12thseason on the Torerostaff. MikeplayedforUSDfrom 1979- 83 and is the school's all-time career leader in three receiving categories: receptions (IOI), touchdowns(18)and receivingyardage(1,722 yards). Mike graduated from USD with an Ac- counting degree in 1984. He is the Assistant Vice PresidentforSecondaryMarketing forGuildMortgageCompanyin San Diego. JACK RUBIDOUX Running Backs Jack returns for his I 0th season with extensive background in coaching at the high schoollevelwithbothfootball andbaseball. He isco-owneroflntegratedSpaceSystems, Incorporated in San Diego. Jack and his wife Gerry have four kids: K.C., Jackie, Lauren and Ryan. KIRK PARRISH ·1 Ends/Running Backs Kirk starts his first yearat USDwhere he will coach tightendsand running backs. This past season Kirk was a graduate assistant at the University ofToledo where he coachedquarter- backs and wide receivers. Prior to that he was a graduate assistant atWashington State, where he assisted with DB's and recruiting. A two-year performer as a quarterback at Central Washington, Kirk received his B.A. in Education from there in 1992. He earned his M.S. degree in Athletic Administration fromWashington State in Decemberof 1994, and is currently working on his Phd. in Education. l\lATT TAYLOR Offensive Line Mau returns to USD to assist Coach the Toreros and his fifth on the offensive side ofthe ball. pioneer football lea ootball league The 1995football season marks the third year forthe PioneerFootball League(PFL), a conference committed to operating aquality football program for the benefit of the student-athletes and the university community. Formed in November of 1991, the Pioneer Football League is comprised of NCAA Division I universities that previously sponsored intercollegiate football atotherlevels. With the passing of NCAA legislation attheJanuary 1991 convention, Division I institutions were required to conduct all intercollegiate sports at the same level. Therefore, the fi ve charter members, Butler University, University of Dayton, Drake University, University of Evansville and Valparaiso University, joined together, sharing a common academic and athletic philosophy and a commoncommitment tooperate quality football programs. In February, 1992,the University ofSan Diegojoined thePFL for its inaugural season. ThePFLjoins the Ivy and the Patriot Leagues as NCAADivision I-AA conferences that provide only need-based financial aid for football players. The conference remains a proponent of NCAA Division I-AAA legislation that would develop a classification for Division I football programs operating with need-based aid and adopted the moniker of Pioneer based on the intent to become one of the first I-AAA leagues. The Gateway Football Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, will administer the communications and administrative duties for the PFL.
