In honor of the West Coast Conference celebrating its 40th season of sponsor– ing the sport of baseball , the conference office is proud to announce the selection of the WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Baseball Team. The University of San Diego had two players, Kevin Herde (1990-93) and Kevin Reese (1997-2000) , players named to the 40th Anniversary Baseball Team. The ceremonial team consists of 40 of the top players that have graced West Coast Conference baseball diamonds over the past four decades. Only individuals from the league's current membership were eligible for selection , with primary focus placed on each player's collegiate accomplishments. The WCC/Rawlings 40th An– niversary Baseball Team was selected by a 30-member voting panel comprised of WCC administrators, league institutions, national collegiate baseball writers, and local media members. The WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Baseball Team features an impressive

collection of past collegiate standouts from the conference's eight member institutions. Included on the list of honorees are 24 players that received WCC Player or Pitcher of the Year recognition during their collegiate careers, 27 All-Americans, 11 Fresh– man All-Americans, and two Academic All-Americans. Highlighting the compilation are 23 players that have played baseball at the Major League level , including Pepperdine alum and 1986 National League Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott, as well as former Gonzaga standout and 2004 National League Rookie of the Year Jason Bay. WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Baseball Team athletes have combined to make seven Major League Baseball All-Star Game appearances, and seven players that participated in MLB games during the 2006 season are included on the list.

Kevin Reese - OF - San Diego - 1997-00 Former Torero standout is listed throughout the San Diego and West Coast Conference record book .. . Two-time AII-WCC first team selection (1999 and 2000) ... Two-time San Diego team MVP (1999 and 2000) .. . Led wee in hits in 1998 (88) ... Ranks sixth in wee history with 41 career home runs ... Ranks eighth all-time in WCC annals in career hits (279) and RBI (185) ... Led team in batting three straight years (.379 in 1998, .372 in 1999 and .385 in 2000) ... Listed in the USO top-10 in several offensive categories, including eighth in games played (207) , fourth in at-bats (773) , fifth in batting average (.361 ), first in hits (279), third in runs (183), second in RBI (185) , seventh in doubles (48) , ninth in triples (14), and second in home runs (41) ... Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 27th round of the 2000 MLB draft .. . Reached the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees in 2005 and saw action with the club in both 2005 and 2006.

The University of San Diego has created the Daryl Dunn Most Inspirational award to be given out each year, beginning in 2007, to the most inspirational player on the team. The award is named after the late former USO baseball player David Dunn , who played for the Toreros from 1975-77 under Hall of Fame coach John Cunningham. Dunn was an outstanding outfielder for the Toreros. In his freshman season he was second on the team in hitting with a .338 batting average. During his freshman season , he racked up 48 hits , had 12 doubles , four triples , two home runs and 25 RBI. During his sophomore season , Dunn saw his num– bers drop a bit as he hit .234 with 32 hits, seven doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI. After his sopho– more season , Dunn went to work on his own and during the summer of 1976, Dunn revived his bat as he hit .352 for National City in the CCBL, earning him AII-CCBL honors. He carried that momentum into his junior year in which he returned to the top of the batters list for the Toreros . In 1978, Dunn led the team in hitting with a .364 batting average, while recording 32 hits, a team-leading 12 doubles, had one triple, one home run and 22 RBI. Dunn concluded his inspirational career for the Toreros with 78 hits, 31 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 70 RBI.

Daryl's son, David, also played baseball at USO under current head coach Rich Hill from 1999-2003. Dunn served as a pitcher for the Toreros and helped USO win back-to-back West Coast Conference championships during his final two seasons. For his career, Dunn posted a 8-3 overall record with 101 career strikeouts.
