SETTING

The University of San Diego is an independent Catho li c in stitution of hi gher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over– looki ng Mi ss ion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The cam– pus is named A lcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Hi stori c Old Town is just minutes away as we ll . The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Compl utum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Chris– tians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institu– tions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. Since 1984, USD has comp leted 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (I, I00 spaces) was comp leted in 1998. A landscaped fountai n plaza was finished in the fa ll of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992 , the univer– sity comp leted the 45.000 sq uare foot Loma Ha ll, which includes an expanded book– store, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Lega l Research Center opened, a faci lity that offers the latest in informati on technology. ACADEMICS

USO enro ll s more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 un– dergraduate and graduate degree programs. The uni ve rsity's academic un its include the Co ll ege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Edu– cation, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 studen ts wi th the studen t to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of US D's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings o f the co untry's co lleges and uni versiti es, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regiona l to national category in 1994. The uni versity is ranked among the top I00 sc hools in the nati on. STUDENT LIFE Student acti vities inc lude cultu ra l events, dances, boat crui ses, beac h parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy ni ghts, symposia and much more. Students partic ipate in a wide range of vo lunteer projects such as adu lt literacy tutoring, senior ci tizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. T he intramu ra l program is also an integra l part of student li fe on campus w ith over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramu ra l sports. ATHLETICS

The Uni versi ty of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference fo r nearly all sports and competes in 16 interco ll eg iate sports on the NCAA Div ision I level. Women's sports inc lude: bas ket– ba ll, crew, cross co untry, soccer, softba ll , swimming, tenni s and vol– leyball. Men 's sports include: baseba ll, basketba ll , crew, cross coun– try, go lf, footba ll, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USD teams have won nine conference championsh ips; made 26 NCAA post-season appear– ances; had 25 Conference Coac hes of the Year; 20 Conference Players of the Year, 11 Conference Freshmen o f th e Year, four WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Year and 29 A ll-Ameri ca se lect ions. The US O Volley– ball program has won two conference champi onships, made five NCAA post-season appear:mces, had three Conference Coaches of the Year and two Confe rence Players of the Year.
