The University of San Diego is an inde pendent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949. USD is located on 180 acres 0\ crlookino Mission Bay. San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is nameJ Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes a~ay as ~ell. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth cenlllry Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish\ ill age near Madrid - Alcala de Henares . Founded b) the Greeks as Complutum. the \'illagc was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the \·illagc centu ri es later and founded a university. the Uni\ersity of Alcala. whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architectural!) unique inqilLJtions in the country. featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. USD has completed ele\'cn major construction and expansion projects. A five -s tory parking garage was completed in 1998. The 5.000 seat Jenn 1 Craig Pa\ ilion. USD\ ne\, Spons/Acli\'ity Center. is due to open in the Fall of :woo: and this past October ~as the ground breaking ceremony for the Joan B. Kroc Peace lnstilllte . A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995. connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Adminiqration Center. In 1992. the uni\'ersit) completed the 45.000 square foot Loma Hall. which includes an expanded book store. a larger mail center. classrooms and labratories. ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 6.900 studenh (4.795 undergraduate) who have a choice

of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Ans and Sciences. and the Schools of Business Administra– tion. Education. Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students wi th the sllldent to teacher ratio being 18: I. O\er 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annua l ratings of the country's colleges and uni\'ersities. published by U.S. Ne1rs & World Report. USD mO\·ed from the regional lo national category in 1994. JENNY CRAIG PAVII.ION • With a donation of $7 million by Sid and Jenny Craig, USO received the lead gift neces– sary to build it'i much needed $17 million Sports/ Activities Center. The pavilion, which is located at the eastern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Baseball Stadium, includes a 5,100-seat gymnasium, coaches of– fices, a 3,800-square-foot fitness center, athletic training facilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand, and reception room. The Monsignor J.B. Eagen Plaza off the Pavilion entry, will take advantage of the view across campus to the ocean. The Chet & Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame is also housed in the facility. The pavilion, which opened this past fall, also serves a range of edu– cational, cultural and athletic events.

The Uni versity of SanDiego is a member of th e West Coast Conference for nearl y all sports and co111petes in sixteen intercoll egiate sports on the NCAA Di vision I level.
