JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach

Beginning his 25th season as head coach of the University of San Diego baseball program, John Cun- ningham has guided the Toreros from a Division II power to one of the most respected Division I teams in the Southern California region. After finishing last year with his 14th winning season, John carries a record of 549-537-13 into the '88 schedule. A native of San Diego, Cunning- ham attended St. Augustine High

School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiving AII- CIF honors in baseball and led the County in scoring during his senior basketball season. Cunningham attended the University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the Na- tional Jesuit Honor Society, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. degree in History as well as a general secondary credential. In basket- ball, John was named All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-America teams. Baseball cornered him a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's ''Athlete of the Year." John began his career at USD in 1962, with 1986 seeing him win his 500th game. His teams have won thirty or more games six times, first in 1971; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981; and final- ly in 1987 (31-23-1). Four of his teams have gone to post-season playoffs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named District 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place finish in the SCBA. In 1985 the Toreros moved into the West Coast Athletic Conference, and are currently playing in the WCAC. Nine of USD's players have been named "All-America" and two of them have been selected to represent the United States in international competition. 1986 and 1987 were winning seasons for the Toreros and Coach Cunningham and his 1988 squad are ready to make a run at the West Coast Athletic Conference leaders. John and his wife Nancy have one son, Geoffrey, age 13.

HEAD COACH JOHN CUNNINGHAM 25 Years of Excellence

To spend 25 years doing any one thing, or to stay at one place for that long is quite unique. To spend 25 years at the same place do- ing the same thing is very special. One such man who has done just that is John Cunningham, the Universi- ty of San Diego's baseball coach. Cunningham, or J.C. as he is called by most, came to USO fresh out of the University of San Francisco in May of 1962 to be a mem- ber of the school's ~acuity as a physical education in- structor and to be an assis- tant basketball coach to newly named head coach and athletic director Phil Woolpert. San Diego was

nothing new to Cunningham, who graduated from St. Augustine High. In 1963 Cunningham started coaching the baseball team in addition to his other duties, and while those duties have changed numerous times over the years, Torero baseball under John Cunningham has not. Cunningham's first years at USO was a time when the school was struggling. "I remember in the early years, the University was in an unstable situation, and the talk among the faculty was if the University would even stay open," recalls Cunningham. "That started to turn around in the late 60's, and turned around dramatically when Dr. Hughes (school president) arrived.•The growth in the last five years has been nothing short of phenomenal." His early years at USO saw Cunningham wearing many hats, usually at the same time. From 1962-76, he served as either the freshmen or junior varsity basketball coach, plus assisting the varsity. From 1962-70, he also served as intramurals director. In addition to those, Cunningham served as athletic director for two weeks, was the athletic trainer for one year, and has logged over 200,000 miles driving USO athletes to away events in the school bus. Cunningham has worked with and coached a number of individuals who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the world of sports. He served as an assistant basketball coach with Bernie Bickerstaff and later recommended him for the head job at USO during his short tenure as athletic director. Bickerstaff is now the head coach of the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA. Cunningham was also responsible for hiring Jim Brovelli, who is now at USF, as the Torero's basketball coach. Among the people who played baseball for Cunningham a;e John Wathan, an All-America selection in 1970, who is now the manager of the Kansas City Royals, and USD's first All-America player, Ron Cady, who is the general manager of the San Diego Sockers. And then there is Phil Woolpert, who coached Cunningham at San Francisco and then hired him on at USO. " I think Phil Woolpert lent instant credibility to the school with his national reputation ," stated Cunningham. One of the reasons Cunningham has stayed on at USO for so long is his philosophy of academics and athletics falls perfectly in line with the University's. "I've always been a believer that academics and athletics are not incompatible," says Cunningham. "You can do both and do both well. Because of budget restraints, we can't do what other schools do, so we have to set certain guidelines, and then work within those guidelines." Cunningham has had his share of success at USO, as his 549 career victories as baseball coach will attest. His contributions to the University have not gone unnoticed, as the school is naming the baseball field after him, 'Cunningham Baseball Stadium'. But 25 years is a long time. How many more years and wins will Cunningham be at USO for? Says the coach himself, "We think that this year's baseball team will be one of the best, and that always gets the juices flowing. I have no immediate plans to do anything other than what I'm doing right now."

JAKE MOLINA Assistant Coach

Coach Molina is begin- ning his third season as as- sistant to John Cunningham. Jake's background prior to USD includes seven years of junior college coaching. He was head coach at Santa Monica College from 1974-TT, before taking over the San Diego City College position from 1978 thru 1984. At San Diego C.C., Jake led the '80 and '81 teams to the con- ference championship. A native of San Diego, Jake graduated from UCLA in '71

with a degree in Physical Education and received his master's degree in Physical Education in 1972 from San Diego State. Jake and his wife Sherri have one son, Nathan, age 14.

GLENN GODWIN Assistant Coach

Coach Godwin begins his third season as pitching coach for the USO Toreros. A 1982 graduate of USD with a degree in Business Admin- istration, Glenn played for Coach Cunningham's '81 and '82 teams. In 1982, Glenn had a 144 record in 21 appearances. Along with his 2.92 ERA, Glenn fanned 142 batters in 148 innings. God- win was drafted by the Oak- land A's organization in 1982 and played A ball for 2 1/2

Head Coach: John Cunningham (33)

Assistants: Jake Molina (6), Glenn Godwin (32)

1988 UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO BASEBALL OUTLOOK John Cunningham's 25th season as the University of San Diego head coach has the ingredients for a very special season. Last season saw the Toreros finish 31-23-1 , marking the sixth time a Cunningham squad had finished with 30 or more victories. USD's only key loss from the '87 squad was Robbie Rogers, a Third Team Academic All-America selection, who played four years at USD and paced last year's team with a .373 batting average. The overall strength of this year's team should be its ability to put runs on the scoreboard. It could be one of USD's better hitting teams in recent memory. Six players return that batted above .300 and the heart of the lineup returns three proven hitters in Mark Trafton, Sean Baron and Dave Rolls. Trafton and Baron are both 1988 All-America candidates for USO who put together some impressive numbers in 1987. Trafton, USO's left- fielder, set a WCAC and USD single season record with 59 runs scored while batting .321 and 51 RBl's. First baseman Sean Baron, with 16 HR's in '87, is an excellent power hitter who is a threat to hit it long everytime up. Baron batted .345 last season while leading the Toreros in homeruns and RBl 's (56). Dave Rolls, who will move to catcher in his senior campaign , slipped to .302 and 5 HR's in '87 after belting 13 dingers and knocking in 48 runs in his sophomore season. Juniors Chuck Graham (.352 B.A.), Andy Roberts (.326 B.A.) and Chris Bwy (.368 B.A.) can also swing the bat. The Torero infield, without 4-year player Robbie Rogers, will have a new look in 1988. Junior Chris Bwy will move from second base to shortstop and junior Andy Roberts from third to second. Third base is up for grabs, with junior returner Chris Stout and newcomers Rick Doane (Clairemont H.S.) and Steve Skamnes (Judge Memorial H.S.) battling for the starting spot. Senior Sean Baron returns at first base and could be one of the best in the west. Senior Mark Trafton again is the key man in the outfield, but will be helped by speedster Scott Kawall , a junior transfer from Waubonsee C.C. in Naperville, Illinois. Junior Chuck Graham will also see con- siderable action in leftfield. The strong arm of Dave Rolls behind the plate should stymie many would-be base stealers. Chuck Graham, along with strong-armed newcomer Steve Stumpfl (Hudson H.S. in Ohio), will also see action behind the plate. Sophomore lefthander Louis Skertich (6-3 in '87) will anchor the pitching staff which should be much improved with the addition of transfer Mike Newby (Mt. San Jacinto C.C.) and freshmen James Ferguson (9-1-1 at Servile H.S.) and Jeff Murphy (5-0 at Sahuaro H.S. in Tucson, AZ). Senior Mark Manor (2-0, 2.63 ERA) will be joining the staff full time this year since his basketball days are over. Sophomore Pat Fitzsimons (4-3 in '87) should be more consistent and junior Jim Westlund (6-2 with 35 appearances) is ready for another good year. The 1988 Toreros are facing their toughest schedule in the school's history. Fortunately, USO appears equipped to do battle with the best. All-America candidate Sean Baron could be one of the premier hitters in the west. The infield is solid and the pitching staff is deeper than in years past. It may take a few games for people to adjust to new posi- tions but the talent and experience is there to compete with anyone. The team's improved pitching should complement the team's strength - the ability to score runs! The 1988 Toreros could be ready to make a serious run at the West Coast Athletic Conference leaders.
