A victorv by USD tonight, especial:y an impressive one. would prnvide food for thought before USD and USJU knock heads No\'. 11. It's no secret coach Andy Vinci's Toreros not only will be trying to win tonight, but to run up the score at the same time. LaVerne comes o n with a 2-1 reading, blan I! Azusa Pacific, 10-0, ,t ek. Meanwhile, USO will depend on the running of halfback Sammy Croom (four TDs, 351 yards, 5. average) and the pitching of quarterback Henry Sintay to ends Roger Leonard and Bill Washington, both of whom have made 12 grabs as the Toreros have split four games to date. Despite completing 37 of 74 attempts, Sintay has yet to get the Toreros on the scoreboard via lhe air. He hopes t

The loss gives USD a 2-3 season record to take against Pomona College on the latter's field Saturday night. ''We tried to bolster our pass defense after being riddled the week before (by Los Angeles State)," Vinci continued. "Then we hold LaVerne without a com- pletion the entire night, but a pass interference call sets up their winning touchdown. "Our defense just couldn't hold on that last quarter. We are really hurting with (line- backer) Mike Wagner out of there (with a chipped elbow). We hope If' have him back for our next home game with Lo- yola." Vinci revealed it was a mat- ter of just having to have your best players out there which forced him to use one of his top two running backs, Andy Sanc- hez, in the defensive secondary against Laverne. "I gue s ou could II 1 dan• ~rous or r ky t An to b·oth w ys," Vine· ex- p ined. '·But we just lei.I; we had to do e were going to

made and the attitude. La- Verne is one of the other six." The Leopards have 43 let- termen on a team which stunned U.S. International l:mversity, 12-10, and blanked Azusa-Pacific, 10-0. Their strength is defense. "Whal worries me," said Vinci, "is that pass defense has been our weakness and LaVerne can throw the foot- ball. They completed two key passes on the drive which beat USJU. Whal we have lo do is keep their quarterback horn scrambling. He's a gond ~mbler and a sidearm passer.'' l also hopes to avoid stopping 1lself. "That's been our problem " •aid Vinci. "We've been sec- ond and 25 or more nme times in four games, mostly due to penalties. Another thing, we haven 't capitalized on our breaks. We fumbled once on the 20 and dropped a pass on the eight against L.A State." Henry Sintay again will quarterback the Toreros, who have averaged 282.5 yards per game. His favorite re- ceivers are flanker Bill Wash- ington and split end Roger Leonard. who have each caught 12 passes. Defensively , middle line- backer Mike Wagner is out wilh an elbow injury and will be replaced by the lone senior on the team, Walt W1lga from Marian High.

It is the feeling of Andy Vinci that many of the 3,200 who attended University of San Drego·s home opener last month "came to see us fail." It also is the feeling of Vin- ci thal, in compiling a 2-2 record in the revival of inter- collegiate football at usn, that the Toreros "arc here lo stay." The Toreros have no1 failed It is likely lhey will be around next year, al least, and it is Vinci·s hope that at least 3,200 will return to US tonight to see the Torerp vin.
