Knights, Ladies Made Members fA · rder By NICHOLAS BIONDO SAN DIEGO - Church history was made in San Diego this week. For the first time in the 900-year history of a papal order an investiture ceremony was held on the West Coast. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem - founded about 670 years before San Diego - invested as Knights and Ladies 53 prominent men and women last Sunday in Immaculata Chapel, Alcala Park. The new members of the nth Century order pledged to be "true soldiers of Christ . . practice Christian perfection ... protect and defend the tomb of Christ . and spread His Name in the Holy Land and everywhere." Investiture of the 27 men and 26 women preceded a concelebrated Mass with Bishop Leo T. Maher as principal celebrant, assisted by Archbishop Joseph T. Ryan of Anchorage, Alaska, who delivered the homily, retired Bishop Thomas K. Gorman of Dallas, retired Bishop Dermont O'Flanagan of Juneau, Alaska, Auxiliary Bishop John R. Quinn and several priests. Bishop O'Flanagan, a San Diego resident, also was Knighted \it the rites. TWO BISHOPS CONDUCT RITES Bishop Maher conducted the rites for the Knights and Bishop Gorman for the Ladies. The honorees wore formal attire, with men in white ties and tails and women in black evening gowns and veil. A packed congregation witnessed the ceremonies. The ancient ritual has been simplified through the years in keeping with the tim ·. The Knights were invested with the symbolic spurs, sword, cross and cape. Bishop Maher, seated befor the altar, told the Knights:
