R ponse to Litany The ceremony will include a public r ·ponse to the litany led by Rev Donald J Shelby, pastor of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Several hymns will be sung by a massed choir formed for the special occasion by members of various San Diego church choirs The combined group will be directed by Carl Gorham, mu ic faculty member at Mesa Evening College The congregation will join the choir in singing "God of Our Father, Whose Almighty Hand" by Daniel C. Roberts. Other choir numbers include "Praise Ye the Lord" by Cesar Franck from Psalm 150, and "Almighty and Everlasting God" by Joseph Roff. Palms Blessed For Missions

Tributes Paid Archbishop

They came from all walks ol life to the University of San Diego campus last Sunday to pay homage to the "people's Bisbop." They came to say an af- fectionate goodbye to their bishop who has guided them spiritually for the last six years as Shepherd of the four-eounty Diocese of San Diego. Many others also came from various cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds to say farewell to Most Rev . Francis J. Furey as a community and ecumenical leader just two weeks before he leaves to become Archbishop of San Antonio. There were speeches and formal tributes to the Arch- bishop who was compared with Father Junipero Serra, Sir Thomas More and Abraham of the Old Testament.

Father I. Brent Eagen, chancellor, was master of ceremonies . He noted that Archbishop Furey came from Philadelphia to San Diego in 1963 and after six years must move again to a new assign- ment. In this respect, said Father Eagen, the Archbishop was like Father Serra who "served as an Aposlle, a worker m the world and as a man among men." Judge Speaks Judge Cunningham, former mayor of San Bernardino and State Senator, cited Archbishop Furey as a "great religious leader" and said that Catholics should be indebted to him for the " truly spiritual life he has led all of us to enjoy. " The judge observed that, like Sir Thomas More, the British martyr, Archbishop Furey was a "man for all seasons," and expressed hope that the new Bishop of San Diego would be "exactly like yourself." Archbishop Furey, continued Judge Cunningham, is responsible in a ·•great measure" for the c1ties' esca pc

Answering Call In comparing the Archbishop with Abraham, Mother Danz said that His Excellency. like Abraham, answered the call "to go forth into a land unfamiliar to him." " Today 4,000 years after Abraham, " she stated, "we see the same staunch and beautiful faith in one we know, a leader we respect and esteem, a father and friend, whom we love and admire. He, too, has received a call, he, too, has responded because he, like Abraham, believes. "He believes in the word he has received . He believes in the One who has spoken that word. The same God who asked so much ol Abraham has now asked much of Archbishop Furey. He is to go forth to a new land, leave his flock and friends, and build a new following in response to a call, a call just as unmistakeable (Continued on Page 5)

But the people did not look for fancy words to express their feelings t the prelate's departure - the words came from their hearts. The afternoon program at the USD outdoor theater was planned by trustees of the Colleges for Men and Women and the School of Law as a farewell gathering for Arch- bishop Furey who also is USD chancellor. But a the same time the progra , somewhat naturally, paid tribute to the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin who became the first men in history to set foot on the moon. Reference to the moon landing was made by Rabbi Joel S. Goor of Temple Beth Israel in his invocation and by Rev. Louis H. Evans, Jr., of La Jolla Presbyterian Church in his benediction. Kept Brief And Archbishop Furey told the crowd of some 400 people that the ceremonies would be kept brief so that everyone could return home to view the moon walk on tele i i n, scheduled for about two hours after the program was dlte to close. "I hear," Archbishop Furey said when he rose to speak, "that the moon walk time has been moved up so I won't take too much of your time." "And," he emphasized, " I want you to know that Houston (space flight center ) is within the ecclesiastical province of San Antonio so we can all feel closer to what's happening there." Other Speeches Other program speakers represented various sections of the community. Superior Court Judge James E. Cunningham of San Bernardino sp e for the people of the San Diego diocese ; Rev. Mother Frances Danz, RSCJ, superior of the Religious of the Sacred Hear in Ole diocese, spoke for- the nuns who founded the allege for Women of which she is president emeritus, and Francisco P . Marty of San Diego spoke as member of the USO Board of Trustees and for the large community of Americans of Mexican descent with whom the Archbishop has been associated.

Archbishop Feted By Cfiancery Staffs All staffs of the San Diego chancery office feted their "boss" Friday at an informal farewell reception on the Alcala Park campus. The occasion probably marked the last time that Most Rev. Francis J . Furey could meet personally all the clerical and lay

members of the offices before leaving San Diego August 5 to become Archbishop of San Antonio. And His Excellency had never seemed to be so touched per- sonally at the many religious and civic farewell functions held for him as he was when he rose to thank all for their faith- ful services. During a buffet dinner on the chancer · patio, Archbishop Furey went from table to table to say a few personal words to each person and to present gifts. He gave to each a wooden plaque with the bronze Star of Bethlehem inscribed with the word, "Peace." The plaques were made by the Terra Sancta •Guild in the Holy Land. Afterwards the chancery staff gave Archbishop Furey a

modernistic stand for a Missal symbolic of the four Evangelists who left us the New Testament - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The stand also was made by the Terra Sancta Guild. I Card in Spanish Accompanying the gift was a farewell card in Spanish read at the gathering by Father I. Brent Eagen, chancellor, who presented the missal stand -to the Archbishop in behalf of the staffs. The stand was ingraved, "Most Rev. Francis J .
