With the emergence of the novel coronavirus SARS- COV-2, many Asian Americans have struggled as American society quickly switched its perception of Asian
Americans from the ‘model minority’ to ‘yellow peril.’ ‘Yellow peril’ languages & attitudes have reemerged in American society, especially within the media. Many Chinese restaurants, businesses, & establishments are suffering from the misinformation & racism accentuated by the pandemic. The reemergence of a ‘yellow peril’ attitude during the coronavirus pandemic further illustrates how America sorts the Asian American community when core American ideologies are threatened. stereotypes, many Asian Americans believe that affirmative actions is damaging for college admissions. By categorizing all Asian Americans as a single heterogenous group, certain groups (including Filipino & South Asian Americans) are permitted from achieving action aids the community & other minority groups. In 2019, an affirmative action suit pertained to the discriminatory actions towards Asian Americans by Harvard admission policies. Although these policiers were not seen as discriminatory, they brought awareness to American society of the harms of the ‘model minority’ myth & how positive stereotyped can be damaging/long lasting. Affirmative Action Although affirmative action has granted many minority groups access to higher education; however, the Asian American community remains divided on the topic.
