Our travel guide collection includes titles such as 1857’s Appletons’ Illustrated Hand-Book of American Travel that features transportation by railway, steamboat, and stagecoach to Michelin’s Illustrated Guides to the Battle-Fields (1914-1918) published at the conclusion of the First World War. When these guides were published, they served to provide travel advice and guidance for their contemporary audiences. Now, by way of Special Collections, these guides give their twenty-first century readers the ability to visit bygone places and communities— to virtually travel back in time.
