RENOVATION UPDATE #2 After many months of a variety of meetings, the idea of a library renovation has become a reality. I’m excited to say that the renovation design phase is complete. On December 17th, the Stakeholders unanimously approved sending the design plans to the construction phase. The signature spaces in the floor plans include:

The first level of Copley will be designed for active learning, the second floor for scholarly learning, and the Mother Hill Reading Room for quiet study. A challenge that the Stakeholders and I are facing is how to bring symmetry between the newly renovated 1985 building and the iconic Mother Hill Reading Room (MHRR). At Homecoming this year and at an Associated Students’ meeting, I was informed by constituents that there is a desire for a stronger connection for the traditional look of the MHRR to exist throughout the Library. To achieve this goal, Pfeiffer Partners Architects is considering using quatrefoils on the ceiling to the entrance of the second floor, which is a hallmark feature of the MHRR ceiling. The team at DPR Construction is already working very hard at streamlining costs and preparing for the renovation of Copley Library. There have been quite a few rumors about books. Yes, we will continue to have a large book collection in the Library. Priority will be given to subjects covered by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) for books located on campus after the renovation. I will be working with a small group of the CAS faculty to review criteria for any books that must be stored off campus. The professional schools were asked at a Stakeholders meeting about their preference for books versus online databases/ journals and they voted for the latter. This vote means that the schools’ representatives supported giving CAS priority access to on site stack space, as they are comfortable with the 24-hour arrangement for stored books to be delivered to campus in the same manner that San Diego Circuit books arrive daily. At this time, it appears that the Copley construction will be phased. The Mother Hill Reading Room will remain open throughout the renovation. The beloved MHRR is excluded from the renovation with the exception of the wings that will be a part of the Camino phase of the Renaissance Plan. While the Learning Commons and the Library are two distinct buildings, the close proximity between them is acknowledged as we reinvigorate Copley and vice versa. The two buildings will share the patio space along with the Art and Architecture Departments. HOMECOMING AT COPLEY LIBRARY: Celebrating the Past with a Look Towards the Future

alumni were invited to kick off their Homecoming celebrations by joining the Dean of the University Library, Theresa Byrd, for a first look at our upcoming renovation plans. The event attracted 25 alumni, from as far back as the 1960s, as well as parents of current and prospective students, who joined us for a light breakfast, mimosas, and great conversation. Renderings of renovation plans encouraged discussion about our future, and a beautiful display of items from decades past inspired guests to share some great stories about their time at USD. Curated by Diane Maher, Head of Archives, Special Collections, and Digital Initiatives, the display featured our reunion years and Golden Torero inductees. We had a lot of fun and the morning ended on a high note when former Copley Student Assistant Kellen Gill (‘08), shared a humorous story that inspired Professor Maher to treat attendees to a private tour of our special collections and archives. Thanks to everyone who joined us for our first annual Homecoming celebration; we look forward to seeing all of you again soon.

Lowriding/Lowriting WITH SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY By Ashley Toutain This past September, the San Diego lowrider community and the San Diego Lowrider Archival Project were highlights of the Lowriding/Lowriting event at the Logan Heights Branch Library. The library lawn was filled with Lowrider club members’ cars and hydraulics demonstrations. Inside the library, Lowrider club founders told their history, two Logan Heights youths shared their writing, and University of San Diego President James T. Harris III spoke. Digital Initiatives Librarian, Amanda Makula, showed the Lowrider Archive in Digital USD and spoke of how the Archive came together through the work of Alberto López Pulido and Rigoberto ‘Rigo’ Reyes. Community members also brought photographs, newspaper articles, and posters that could be scanned and added to the Lowrider Archive. This event was a partnership between many community organizations including the San Diego Public Library, the Chicano Park Museum, Via International, the San Diego Lowrider Council, and 52 Weeks of Science. Faculty and Staff Anniversaries

THIS FALL, SEVERAL MEMBERS of the Copley Library faculty and staff were recognized for their years of service to the University of San Diego. We congratulate and celebrate our colleagues.

New Faculty at Copley Library Vanjury “V.” Dozier joined the faculty of Copley Library as the new embedded Education Librarian for the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES). She comes to Copley Library from the University of Alabama where she served as the Education Librarian. She has also held varied reference and technical library positions at other institutions including Mississippi State University and Stillman College. Notably, V. holds Secondary English Education teaching certificates in North Carolina and Alabama. She has a strong technology background. V. is an experienced workshop presenter on topics such as developing a literature review and using Nvivo for literature reviews; research strategies for graduate students; finding appropriate resources for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research; and citation managers (e.g., Endnote, Refworks, and Zotero). V. has served on committees for university, local, and national organizations. She currently is a member of the Education and Behavioral Sciences Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries Curriculum Materials Committee. As an emerging researcher, her research agenda includes interests in the experiences of librarians of color, educational technology, and graphic novels as educational tools. V. earned her BA at Tuskegee University, where she majored in English. She received her MA in Teaching, Secondary English Education at Duke University, and her MLIS in Library Science from the University of Alabama. She is currently completing the requirements for a PhD in Instructional Leadership, with an emphasis in Instructional Technology.
