Holy Communion was again l distributed to the Base at 8 :00 o'clock where a much larger num- ber received it. In all, 768 Marines received Holy Communion here on Easter Sunday. The climax of the paschal ob- serve.nee was the High Mass at 10 o'clock attended by all ol the Base, sung by Rev. David H. Mc- Donald, USNR, Assistant Base Chaplain with the Most Rev. Charles F. Buddy,, D.D., Bishop of San Diego presiding at the throne. The Mass was held in the great out-door amphitheatre which we.s very tastily decorated with lillies, palms and lights. The Mar in e Band directed by Capt. Talbot played the processional and reces- sional. A selected choir of over 40 voices chanted the Missa de An- gelis, using Werner's "Regina Coeli" for an offertory. The exe- cution of these pieces of Gregorian chant was exceptionally fine and reflected great credit on Corporal (Continued on Page 3.) 1 BISHOP PONTIFICATES

etter of His Excellen In Re 4-Point Program To Our Beloved People in the Counties of River- side, San Bernardino, Imperial and San Diego: Greeting.s and peace in the Lord! The Bishops of the United States designated Sunday, March 15, for a general collection to aid the devastated nations of the world. If one year ago the need was urgent, now it is desperate. The horrors of invaded territories have multiplied, af- fecting millions. How? By separation and destruction of families, by imprisonment in concentration camps, by unspeak- able, inhuman cruelties that spare neither the aged, nor women, nor tender children. Lack of food, clothing, medical care, bitter cold, starvation, pestilence, and, even worse than physical agonies, millions have been deprived of the sustainirig power of our holy religion-all these intensify the suffering. And now the frightfulness of war has engulfed our beloved country. May God be pleased to avert from us the afflictions harrowing other countries, where from tortured lives and broken hearts of parents and children comes the cry to each one of us: ''In the name of Jesus Christ send us help!" Can we close our eyes and harden our hearts to ·the plight of stricken humanity in di5tant lands? Prompt and generous giving on our part may save us in the future as it has doubtless saved us in the past a full measure of war horrors. Since you have been invoked in the name of our Saviour, I appeal to you in the name of Christ to help in ~his dire distress. Our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, will be asked to distribute most of the alms as he did so effec- tively last year. He has the organization avaHable to insure the certain delivery of your donation with- out overhead. In a word, if you give one dollar for bread and milk, one hundted pennies worth of bread and milk go to the starving. This appeal is intended to preclude the necessity of many differ- ent collections. Last year we begged help for the exiles of Poland, Lithuania, the Baltic States, Ger- many, Austria, Czechoslovakia, China, Mexico, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Italy and Scandinavia. Today .we must include Jugoslavia, Greece, Burma, the Dutch Indies, Borneo, the Philippines, anq Hawaii. We cannot of course .satisfy all the hunger, nor restore what a modern paganism has wrecked but (Continued on Page 5) '

BISHOP CONFESSES MARINES A noteworthy feature of the Easter Celebration took place Holy Saturday night when the Bishop heard confessions at the Marine Base. His Excellency's Secretary, Father Kubala, was also pressed into this service. The U.SMC felt signally honored; for ost of them it was their first "episcopal" Easter.
