Cultural Arts Adding A Touch of Diversity
In her role as Director of Cultural Arts in A.S., Jennifer Sporl brings the cultural arts of San Diego to the students at USD, to make them aware of what other cultures have to offer. She, along with her new assistant Christine White, are responsible for organizing activities during ethnic holi– days such as Oktoberfest and Chinese Easter. They also get theatre tickets discounted for students, as well as hire bands to play at the weekly Bourbon Street Grille, for which Christine is solely responsible. Jenn wants to cater to the students' desire, while constantly introducing new things.
Jenn feels the need to get feedback from the students on the success of her projects. She makes herself visible at events for people to approach her and offer their opinions. She also gets the reaction of A.S. on her various under– takings. All these opinions add to the planning of future projects, to make them better. Future projects for Jenn include opening a student art gallery in April and Cultural Awareness Week from March 1 to 5, where she will have different ethnic bands or dancers per– forrning in front of the U.C. every day, as well as speakers to promote cultural diversity and awareness.

Michelle further cultivated awareness in a way that will attract the students. More importantly, these issues were eas– ily found in the real world; she felt that her projects helped initiate awareness beyond academics, and beyond the hill.
As the Director of Social Issues for A.S., Michelle Castellano brought a "necessary awareness" to the USD Com- · munity about issues facing our society today. She headed a committee of representatives from various special interest groups such as MEChA and SAESO, and also sat on the faculty committee of social issues. The focus of these two groups was to organize events that would bring to mind the reality of social issues in this day and age. Some of her successes include the Gay Awareness panel and Aids Awareness Week. While keeping it on a personal level, Aids Awareness Week was held on a large scale. The two major projects were the name-bracelets and the T-shirts depicting the percentage in San Diego who were HIV positive, stating, "and
