WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Kathy Marpe, beginning her second season as head coach of the University of San Diego women'sbasketball pro­ gram, isoptimistic about the upcom­ ing season. Last year the team fin­ ished 6-24, however, the Lady Toreras return 9 players who have been through the program and welcome 4 newcomers. Playing as an Indepen­ dent this year, the Toreras face a tough schedulethat includes contests with 22 Division 1 teams out of 32 contests. The Toreras have 16 home games and 16 road contests. USD's schedule includes such noted West Coast powers asPepperdine, Nevada- Las Vegas, Arizona State, and cross town rival San Diego State. USD is ledby 6-2 senior center Sara Jane, an All Conference player last year. Also returning are 5-8 junior guard Barbara Minear, the teams' de­ fensive standout and 5-9 sophomore forward Annette Everett. Rounding out the returnees are 5-7 sophomore guard Lori Morris, 6-5 junior center Martha Nelson who missed part of last season from an ankle injury, 5-7 sophomore guard Laura Thomas and 5-4 junior guardKiela Harper. Trans­ fers joiningthe Toreras are 6-3 senior forward Debbie Weinreis, a strong re- bounder and scorer from the Universi­ ty of New Mexico and 5-10 sophomore guard Lisa McNamee from San Diego State University. New r cruits include 5-7 freshman guard Link Bauman (Huntington Beach) and 5-10 fresh­ man forward Mary Stanbra (Garden Grove). Coach Marpe looks forward to her team improving throughout the season, and puts strongemphasis on agressive defense. She feels that, "With nine experienced players re­ turning who have been through our program, along with our added height and quickness, I look for our team to be very competitive."
