BASEBALL The key word is optimism this year as Coach John Cunningham starts his fifth season as head baseball coach at the University of San Diego, with the toughest schedule in the school's history. Leading the pitching staff this year is 6-6 Dural Carpenter. In the 1967 campaign Dural compiled an ERA of 1.69, the lowest in Torero history. Two young pitchers from the San Diego area are Steve Davis and Gary Myron. Steve Davis from Point Loma High where he led the Pointers to the Western League Championship last year, and received a position on the Brietbard All-Star team. Gary Myron is a fire-balling right-hander from Mission Bay High, who pitched all CIF caliber ball for the Bucs last year, recording 11 victories in 14 deci– sions, and also was nominated a Brietbard All-Star. Others on the hill staff include John Briskey, from Provo, Utah, Dave Timms, a southpaw from Mesa College, and Tom Brown, a side-armer from Anaheim. The two "old men" of the '68 varsity will be counted on to carry the offensive burden this year. Chuck Rutledge, right fielder, who came to USD from Arizona State, hit .315 last year and led the team in home runs. "Lucky" Tommy Thompson was last year's Co– MVP: a former AII-CIFer at El Cajon High. Tom has played stellar ball as shortstop for the Toreros the last two years and was All-League for the Toreros last year and All-League again in the summer for La Mesa Collegians. Tommy has been drafted by the Los Ange– les Dodgers. Last year's "Hustle Award" winner is Rick Baker, a sophomore first baseman. Another sophomore starter is Dennis Forester, a 6-1 catcher who could become a candidate for All-League honors. From St. Augustine's High are two more frosh who will be starting in the '68 season: third baseman– outfielder John Wathan and second-sacker Dave Gon-
