At Cal State, the Diablos earned easy victory of 81-72, as Ted Fields was outstanding that evening. A three game homestand began with a 51-49 victory over the University of Redlands. Ted Fields scored two free throws with two seconds left to give USO another victory. University of California at Irvine came to the USO gym and with Cabrera scoring 18 and Fields 17, the game was a big win for USO. With a week to prepare for the Homecoming Game. Coach Woolpert worked his team hard to meet Nevada Southern which had a 17-4 record for the season. Magee and Carpenter played great defensive ball but All-American Miller scored 30 points. With but a min– ute to go USO drew within two points but lost at the buzzer 87-83. The Toreros. off to a shakey start in the next game. downed Chapman College 74-68. The team in its final homestand had Rick Cabrera to help with a 28 point performance as the Toreros downed the Whittier Poets 65-60. In a local!~· televised contest. USO pulled the game out when Ted Fie1Js stole a pass to score in the final seconds to defeat Cal-Western 69-68. In a return en– gagement with Cal-Western at the Sports Arena. as a preliminary to the San Diego Rockets-Cincinnati Royals game USO dropped the final game of the season 74-59. Fields was again highpoint man scored 19 in the game. The advent of the new schedule. and the new bleachers. the more consistent and larger number of crowds. the orchestra all gave to the 1967-1968 season a ring as the best in the history of the University. The two games played as prelims to the Pro National Basketball teams. and the televised games. offer un– limited possibilities for next year. In looking back over the 1967-1968 season. Coach Woolpert aided by John Cunningham and Bernie Bickerstaff. brought on the second best win season in the University history with 15 wins and 10 losses. Willie Moore. trainer. did an outstanding job in helping to keep injuries down to a minimum. Coach Woolpert had in fact. in order to upgrade the calibre of op– ponents. scheduled the toughest schedule in the team's history.
