Figure 5 Line Plots of Pass and Red Zone Rates Against Scoring
In Figure 6, we investigate the relationships between turnovers and scoring in the NFL. The left plot depicting the relationship between average score at home and fumbles committed by the home team reveals a notable trend. The average home score peaks at approximately 24.5 when the number of fumbles committed by the home team is at its lowest, around 0.0. However, as the count of fumbles increases, the average home score gradually declines. At a fumble count of 4, the average home score reaches its nadir, dropping to around 17.8. Similarly, the right line plot illustrating the correlation between average home score and interceptions made by the home
team indicates a negative relationship between these variables. Initially, the average home score is at its zenith, reaching 27 when interceptions made by the home team are absent (i.e., 0 interceptions). However, as the interceptions by the home team increase, the average home score steadily decreases. Interestingly, there is a slight deviation from this negative trend when interceptions made by the home team reach 5. At this point, there is a slight uptick of 0.5 in the average home score. Nevertheless, the overall trend resumes its downward trajectory, reaching its lowest point of approximately 7 when interceptions made by the home team reach
