Background Information

The cutting-edge aspect of this project is the use of quantum neural networks for

machine learning. Therefore, a brief introduction to quantum computing and quantum neural

networks is in order before covering more project specific background topics.

Brief Quantum Computing Primer

The fundamental unit of computation in a quantum computer is the quantum bit, more

commonly known as a qubit. Qubits are fundamentally different from existing bits as well as

probabilistic bits:

Existing computers are called classical computers and operate on bits: which can be

either 1 or 0, exclusively. A probabilistic bit is simply a bit that will take on the value of 1 or 0 with

a certain probability. Quantum computers operate on qubits. These qubits can be 1 or 0 like a
