2025 USD New Faculty Orientation
2025 NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO
NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION PURPOSE The purpose of New Faculty Orientation is to welcome new faculty members to the University of San Diego community while providing them with a strong foundation for their ongoing success. The program consists of three primary components: • Information about the history, mission, vision, values, Catholic identity and strategic direction of the university as well as how each faculty member is invited to contribute to these.
• A robust experience of
community with other new faculty members as well as with established faculty and administrative colleagues across campus.
• Resources necessary to begin a successful faculty appointment. Through the orientation process – including the August program and the two ongoing sessions – new faculty will experience the rich hospitality and culture of care that is characteristic of USD while developing a strong connection with the university.
DAY 1: FOUNDATIONS AND CATHOLIC INTELLECTUAL TRADITION The first day of New Faculty Orientation prioritizes articulating the unique history, mission and vision of USD as well as the deep connections between our liberal arts foundation and the distinctive nature of Catholic higher education. Highlights of the day include remarks from Interim Provost Santilli, a discussion of USD’s mission, vision and values, a presentation on the liberal arts, and USD’s approach to and practice of inclusive excellence. The day concludes with a presentation on resources for high-impact teaching.

DAY 2: RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP AND GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES Grounded in the belief that thinking – serious, sustained intellectual reflection – is both profoundly good and necessary, the Catholic intellectual tradition is the 2,000-year dialogue between faith, reason and culture. Its key principles include the compatibility of faith and reason, sacramentality, tradition, community, integration and social justice. New faculty members will be invited to see the Catholic intellectual tradition as a resource and reference point for their teaching, scholarship and service while learning about some of the many campus resources designed to support their success as scholars. The day’s schedule includes a discussion about research, scholarship, centers and institutes, and international opportunities. The day concludes with a reception hosted by President Harris.

DAY 3: DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON One of the most fundamental aspects of Catholic higher education is its commitment to the intrinsic value of each human being as created in the image of God. The person’s sacred worth obligates us to promote conditions consistent with human dignity and reform conditions which threaten that dignity. Commitment to the dignity of persons is the foundation for social justice and other efforts to create a more inclusive, sustainable and hopeful world. Day 3 of New Faculty Orientation emphasizes some of the many ways that USD strives to protect and promote human dignity – on our campus and beyond. Representatives from Mission Integration, Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action, Changemaker Hub, University Ministry, Center for Inclusion and Diversity, Student Affairs and Athletics will illustrate some of the many ways in which the dignity and holistic development of our students is supported.
