WOMEN'S TENNIS

The 1983 Women'sTennis Team started their tough schedule of spring matches with a feeling of success and enthusiasm. Five top veterans returned to lead the Torerasto victory: number one singles andpast SCA Player ofthe YearDiane Farrell, No. 2 singles MariearmenCasta, No. 3 singles Judy Newman, No. 4 singles Nam! Kouzu, and No. 5singles Geralyn Sullivan. New­ comers to the team were Lisa Blitz, Carolyn Reed, Pam Wil­ liams, KellyHill, Vickie Poehari and Lisa Sutherland.Compet­ ing against such powerhouses as Stanford, USC, UCLA, SDSU, Pepperdine, and Berkeley, the Toreraswere led as always by past SCA Coach of the Year Scott McCarthy. McCarthy felt that thekey to the team's successwas its great depthand the experience of the returningplayers, combinedwith the added talent of the newcomers.
